South Gate Intersections
Aisha Wallace-Palomares
Like many other cities in South East Los Angeles, the primarily Latino working-class community of South Gate is one that faces extreme environmental injustice. The city of South Gate is considered one of the most environmentally burdened communities in the state of California. This mini podcast series explores the many environmental hazards in the area including “The Brown Water Issue,” hazardous waste threats from many fronts including the Exide Battery facility, air pollution, and limited open/green space access. As climate change continues to progress, the urban heat island effect will only exacerbate and add to existing burdens. Covid-19 has further revealed and reinforced the dire need to address and take action on these environmental injustices.
